(Prefacing poem with note, today is UK mothers day)

Dropped off your card,
over coffee yesterday, with
the boy in tow, his Saturday ritual.
I'd planned a suprise,
3 stops on the train
and a fancy breakfast,
some flowers from the flower man,
booming about bunches
over the market throng.
In the end, we left you after coffee,
suprises do not always fit
with agendas,
so an IOU for the breakfast,
and a walk home.

It seems apt, when I reflect,
the time spent searching for
a card that doesn't say "Best",
or "Greatest" or another variation.
I've spent enough of
my time overthinking,
feeling like a lonely child,
whilst being the adult.
And there are no cards,
that say
"It's complicated, but I love you".
Generic is sometimes best,
and leave some words unsaid.
