On this day, March 13, 1979, the New Jewel Movement (NJM), led by Maurice Bishop, launched a bloodless coup in Grenada, overthrowing Prime Minister Eric Gairy while he was abroad. This revolution established the People's Revolutionary Government (PRG), which ended Gairy's controversial regime and implemented socialist policies until 1983.
