I have a PLB, as I'm in remote areas quite a bit. I'm also a search and rescue manager and search theorist in my state, and a PLB is an amazing little piece of technology. I would really only ever use a 406 MHz, a "proper" PLB. If they don't operate on 406 then they don't use the COSPAS/SARSAT system. A 406 beacon will get you found, usually, within 2 hours in the US and they work everywhere, even the poles. You need to be careful because the popular 2 way communicators like the "Spot" don't use 406 but their own frequency and operate their own dispatch center. I have heard of rare problems with the private companies response. Most 406 PLB's have a higher cost, but no subscription fees, but the battery needs to be factory replaced
