Paralympics, Perathoner gifts Italy its first gold: “And now I want another.”
A day to frame for Italy at the Milan-Cortina Paralympics: blue swimmer Emanuel Perathoner won the gold medal in snowboard cross SB-LL2 in Cortina d’Ampezzo, thus giving Italy its third medal of the campaign (after the silver of Chiara Mazzel and the bronze of Giacomo Bertagnolli), the first gold. “The goal,” declared the South Tyrolean rider to ilfattoquotidiano.it, “is to win the gold medal, but it’s a race and anything can happen.” Perathoner brought the tricolor to the highest step of the podium for the first time in this edition of the Paralympic Games. Behind him, Australian Ben Tudhope (+2″4) and Korean Lee Jehyuk (+3″01).
“Beautiful, that’s what we aimed for in these seasons. Wonderful. Today the track was perfect for my characteristics, it’s a shame that some athletes got hurt. Next week we’re aiming for another gold (the banked slalom, ed.), we hope for the best. I’ve always dominated in that discipline but this is my favorite,” declared the Italian athlete after winning the first gold of the Italian campaign.
He previously competed as an able-bodied athlete, has been competing with a motor impairment for five years, and is one of the symbols of the Italy Team at the Milan-Cortina Winter Paralympic Games in Paralympic snowboarding. Already a protagonist in the world of snowboarding with two Olympic participations in Sochi 2014 and Pyeongchang 2018, his career changed in January 2021. He suffered a serious injury to his left leg during preparation for the Beijing Games. After four surgeries and the application of a total knee prosthesis, the challenge seemed over. Instead, after a year of rehabilitation, Emanuel returned to the board, reinventing himself as a Paralympic champion. And today he won his first gold.
