Agi: Mondiali 2026: Iraq chiede rinvio playoff di fine marzo

AGI - Alla luce del protrarsi del conflitto in Medio Oriente, la nazionale di calcio dell'Iraq ha chiesto un rinvio dello spareggio per la qualificazione ai mondiali 2026 in programma a fine mese in Messico. Lo ha reso noto il ct, l'australiano Graham Arnold. L'Iraq il 31 marzo dovrebbe affrontare a Monterrey la vincente tra Suriname e Bolivia nei playoff per accedere alla Coppa del mondo che si terrà da giugno a luglio in Canada, Stati Uniti e Messico. 
L'Iraq teme di non riuscire a trasferire tutti i suoi giocatori in Messico a causa della chiusura del suo spazio aereo fino al termine della guerra e ha respinto una proposta della Fifa di far arrivare via terra a Istanbul i calciatori perché questo comporterebbe un viaggio in pullman di 25 ore. Arnold, al timone dell'Iraq dal maggio 2025, ha sottolineato che convocare solo i calciatori che giocano all'estero pregiudicherebbe le possibilità della sua nazionale di qualificarsi ai mondiali per la prima volta dal 1986.
La richiesta
"Non sarebbe la nostra migliore formazione e abbiamo bisogno della nostra migliore formazione per la più grande partita per l'Iraq degli ultimi 40 anni". "Il popolo iracheno è pazzo per la sua nazionale e la sfida di regalargli un mondiale dopo 40 anni è il motivo per cui ho accettato questo incarico", ha sottolineato il ct.
La Federcalcio irachena ha evidenziato i pericoli di un trasferimento via terra in Turchia tenuto che si dovrebbero attraversare territori attualmente bersaglio di attacchi iraniani. Di qui la richiesta di una decisione in tempi brevi sul rinvio, già questa settimana, in modo da dare certezze alla sua nazionale impegnata nella preparazione dello spareggio.
C'è anche un altro motivo per cui la federazione cerca di prendere tempo: se, come è possibile, l'Iran (già qualificato) dovesse comunicare la sua rinuncia a partecipare ai mondiali in cui dovrebbero giocare le prime tre partite negli Stati Uniti, l'Iraq è il candidato più forte a prenderne direttamente il posto quale nazionale con il ranking più alto nel girone di qualificazione asiatico.

World Cup 2026: Iraq asks for postponement of March playoff

Due to the prolonged conflict in the Middle East, the Iraqi national football team has requested a postponement of the playoff match for qualification to the 2026 World Cup, scheduled for the end of the month in Mexico.
