Went down a rabbithole of looking at what MLPerf Storage Training benchmarks do; turns out they're not very meaningful IMO. Alarming how many practitioners (mostly storage vendors) run them and don't understand what the results do/don't represent.

I expect that training with NVFP4 will be a hot topic at GTC next week. NVIDIA reports a 1.59x speedup over BF16 (https://developer.nvidia.com/blog/using-nvfp4-low-precision-model-training-for-higher-throughput-without-losing-accuracy), but context: this speedup was measured on a tiny (8B), dense transformer with minimal high-latency comms in the loop. It is the best-case scenario.
1.59x will go down for modern frontier models which are bigger (less GEMM-dominant) and sparser (MOE or hybrid state-space models).
4-bit precision seems good for inferencing, less so for training.
