Prima ancora di annullare tre set point e vincere il primo set al tie-break, Jannik Sinner è stato protagonista di un altro momento ad alta tensione durante gli ottavi del Masters 1000 di Indian Wells, vinti con un doppio 7-6 contro il 19enne Joao Fonseca. Questa volta però non per questioni di campo, ma riguardanti il pubblico. Nel 12esimo game del primo set, avanti 40-15, Sinner prima di servire è andato diretto verso la prima fila di spettatori e si è rivolto a muso duro contro alcuni disturbatori, indicandoli con la mano. Secondo la versione dell’altoatesino, chiacchieravano ad alta voce durante gli scambi e prima del suo servizio.
Prontamente è intervenuto il giudice di sedia, l’esperto Gregory Allensworth, che è arrivato vicino a Sinner per chiedere delucidazioni e poi è intervenuto con un richiamo ufficiale al pubblico: “Non parlate durante i punti”. Così sono partiti i fischi del resto dello stadio verso i disturbatori. Poi il match è ripreso senza ulteriori problemi: Sinner ha tenuto il servizio, al tie-break ha rischiato di perdere per poi rimontare Fonseca e chiudere 8 a 6. Nel secondo set un calo mentale quanto era avanti 5 a 3, ma anche la vittoria netta al tie-break che vale i quarti di finale contro Learner Tien.
