Mysterious object blocks Berlin airport. The ghost drone strikes again.
Air traffic at Berlin-Brandenburg Airport was temporarily suspended after the sighting of an unidentified flying object. The suspension, according to Bild and several German media outlets, was decided for security reasons and lasted approximately half an hour following a “standard procedure,” a spokesperson for the Berlin airport said. The airport is now evaluating the next steps together with the police. The spokesperson told t-online that there were no take-offs or landings between 18:40 and 19:15. Operations were then resumed and no flight cancellations are expected. However, delays are possible.
A “bright flying object” was sighted over the Bundeswehr hangar shortly before 19:00, an airport spokesperson told Tagesspiegel. A spokesperson for the Federal Police said that, at this time, it is unclear what type of object it was. Air traffic control raised the alarm and ordered the suspension of operations. “We need to verify if there was actually a flying object,” the spokesperson said, adding that the situation remains unclear at present and that consultations are underway with all relevant authorities.
There was initially no indication on the airport’s website of the brief suspension of operations. The airport instead notified Lufthansa customers of possible disruptions in view of a planned strike for Thursday and Friday. However, according to air traffic information, several flights on Wednesday evening were already experiencing strong delays. Several unidentified flying object incidents have occurred in recent months at airports. For example, in November, Berlin Airport had to temporarily suspend operations due to a drone alarm. The police then deployed a helicopter, but the drone was not subsequently traced. Chancellor of Germany Friedrich Merz has accused Russia of being behind numerous recent sightings of drones on sensitive sites in Germany and elsewhere in Europe, including airports, military bases, and power plants. In October, the detection of drones over Munich led to the closure of the airport twice, forcing thousands of passengers to land after their flights were cancelled or diverted.

Khatijah Rahmat, a postdoctoral researcher at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Germany, is working to build legitimacy around the concept of “animal temporality” — the capacity to live and perceive time — focusing specifically on elephants. This perspective could have important implications for their conservation and beyond.
“The way we imagine an animal’s relationship with time affects our perception of their ability to feel emotions and remember experiences. My goal is to encourage a more dynamic view of their place in the world, recognizing them as temporal beings.”

Germany, Ozdemir triumphs in Baden-Württemberg: a strong economy is needed.
Stuttgart, March 9 (askanews) – From being the son of Turkish “guest workers” (Gastarbeiter) to triumph as Minister-President of Baden-Württemberg. In Germany, Cem Ozdemir, a 61-year-old leading candidate for the Greens and symbol of Turkish integration, will inherit the seat from Winfried Kretschmann: after 15 years and at 77 years old, the latter retired, while the Greens have won a historic victory in the regional elections in the Land.
Born December 21, 1965, in Bad Urach (Reutlingen district) in Swabia, Ozdemir grew up as a single child. His parents arrived in Germany as “Gastarbeiter” at the beginning of the 1960s, where they met and fell in love. After completing secondary school, he completed an apprenticeship as a childcare assistant in Reutlingen in 1987; initially oriented towards the world of work, he then opted for the admission title to university at a vocational school in N rtingen, followed by an academic path and experience as a freelance journalist.
The “Gastarbeiter” were immigrants – primarily Italians, Spaniards, Yugoslavs, Greeks, and Turks – recruited by West Germany between 1955 and 1973 to address the labor shortage during the economic boom.

Ultra with ski masks tamper with the VAR monitor: bewildered referee, chaos in Germany.
A shocking VAR sabotage in Germany: During the match between Preussen Munster and Hertha Berlin, in the second division of the Bundesliga, a home team ultras cut the power cord to the VAR monitor, preventing a review of a controversial incident. After a visiting player was grounded in the penalty area, referee Felix Bickel was called back onto the field by the VAR assistant to assess a possible penalty. However, the referee found himself facing a black screen due to the sabotage of a fan in a green mask who invaded the field and tampered with the equipment. Simultaneously in the green-and-black fan section of Vestfalia, a banner reading “Cut the VAR cable” was displayed.
After several minutes, the final decision was entrusted to his assistant in the VAR room in Cologne, Katrin Rafalski, who awarded the penalty after reviewing the footage. The fan has not yet been identified, but the German club apologized and promised an investigation into the incident and new measures to prevent similar sabotage in the future. Hertha Berlin then won the match 2-1 with a last-minute goal after the Preussen Munster’s temporary lead.

I've just been writing about "Vertigo: The Rise and Fall of Weimar Germany" by Harald Jähnner.
One author discussed there is Helmuth Plessner, with a focus on his 1924 "Grenzen der Gemeinschaft" (Limits of Community).
Katja Haustein wrote about Plessner in a TLS review (24/4/20) of his "Political Anthropology":
>>In Political Anthropology (Macht und menschliche Natur), written in 1931, Plessner discusses the anthropological origins of the human tendency to give in to authoritarian forms of government. Closely linked to his earlier and more accessible essay, The Limits of Community (1924), the book reads as a passionate warning against the rise of social and political radicalism that so exhausted the Weimar Republic. Much of Plessner's argument is based on what Richard Sennett has called the "tyrannies of intimacy". Plessner claimed that the central problem of modern subjectivity was not a growing distance between individuals, but, on the contrary, its disappearance. He curbed widespread expectations that promote politicized conceptions of community (Gemeinschaft) as a space in which alienation would dissolve. He attacked the idealization of a "seamless togetherness" tainted by nationalist colours, and defended the idea of society (Gesellschaft) as a space in which distance affords man his dignity. <<
I've got to read some Plessner!

I've recently read "Vertigo: The Rise and Fall of Weimar Germany" by Harald Jähner.
Specialists with a good knowledge of the political history of interwar Germany will probably agree with the criticisms of leading historian Richard Evans in his 29/11/ 24 TLS review, in which he notes the failure of the book to address important aspects of the republic's politics such as the nature of the constitution.
Evans goes on to criticise "Vertigo" as being overly focused on Berlin and its culture of modernity and its neglect of rural and small town Germany.
For a cultural history, though, this emphasis on Berlin is justified, because that metropolis was offering novel aspirations, norms, and ways of living for the country as a whole, even if the reaction to that agenda in much of rural Germany was one of suspicion, resentment, and finally hatred. One rural commentator Jähner quotes noted with bitterness the exodus of women to the city, "the mass grave of the German people", attracted as they were by "greed, by pleasure seeking, by hollow noise in every area of life, by noisy oriental Jewish nonsense in state politics, department stores and theatres."
I would guess that the these seductive possibilities were made known throughout the German speaking world by the mostly Berlin based media of cinema and the illustrated press. Even if the overwhelming majority of Germans neither actively participated in the new forms of art and entertainment flowering in Berlin nor experimented with new metropolitan practices and presentations in sex and gender, the very existence of this new culture could not do other than transform cultures beyond the metropolis, even if only by introducing within them a self-conscious note of antiurban antimodernity.
Jähner, a journalist, has a good feel for both aspects of everyday life that might pass unnoticed by too many historians, such as the yoyo craze of 1932, and also for the disparate and sometimes internally contradictory emotions, moods, and feelings underlying the republic's culture.
Although "Vertigo" is neither comprehensive nor unquestionable in its treatment of Weimar Germany , it is a rich and thoroughly readable resource for non-Germanists like me, and notable for its determination to treat the culture of the republic as worthy of examination and perhaps celebration in its own right, as opposed to being merely an interlude leading to the advent of the Third Reich.
